Why I Close My Restaurant was written by George Mardikian in the 1950's. In this essay, Mardikian tells why he closes his restaurant every year on Christmas Eve.
Mardikian tells the reader that he came to America to flee from the Turks and Russians who invaded his native country of Armenia. As soon as Mardikian arrived in America he felt he had lost "all the hatreds and prejudices of the old world." Mardikian says his life in America is filled with joy and friendship, but he continues to follow an old Armenian tradition: he closes his restaurant every Christmas Eve and serves his employees. Mardikian and his wife choose to serve their employees on Christmas Eve to help give their employees a good Christmas experience and he believes that "true humility is a basic need of mankind today." Since Mardikian's experiences in America have been kind and many Americans have helped him get to where he is today, he and his wife feel they should give-back. Therefore, they serve their own employees.
I believe that this is a wonderful gesture. It shows the kindness of the Mardikians and how much they appreciate what America has done for them. This is a wonderful way of showing their humbleness. Although Mardikian is an immigrant, he worked to achieve where he is today and still appreciates his humble beginnings and how America helped him. If only all immigrants could be this appreciative.
