It is often said that dogs are a man's best friend. In the Fred's case, his dog Buster was not only his greatest companion but also his greatest aspiration. To live the carefree life of a dog would be a dream for many people. No responsibilities, homework, problems, or schedules to follow. As the author points out, Buster's only real decision in life was what tree to mark next. But even though this makes life more enjoyable, we would miss out on some of the greatest advantages of being humans (ex. opposable thumbs, the ability to read and analyze, relationships, eating chocolate, etc). In our society, living the "good life" is defined by how successful, rich, and attractive you are. Look at celebrities, they are the world's most loved and hated people. Why? Because they are supposedly living the "good life". Well yeah, if the good life meant multiple divorces, no true friends, an obsession with material items, drug/alcohol problems, and absolutely no privacy. Society has quickly forgotten that it is the little everyday moments and details that lead us to the "good life". We have been so overloaded with worry from the news and strained under responsibilities that things like reading good book or doing nothing for a day seem to be a waste of time. Humans are only given one life to enjoy, but how can one enjoy the same boring routine we fall into as we mature?
Fred's essay really made me stop and think about the things I enjoy most, perhaps tomorrow i will follow Buster's example and finally learn how to live.
