In the article “There is No God” by Penn Jillette, Penn Jillette bluntly states that he believes in no god. He begins to try and reason out why having no god would be the best thing that could happen to this world. He explains that the belief in no god will shape society to be kinder and more generous. Jillette shows how his own belief in no god shows that the same thing he has experience can happen to everyone who fallows his lead.
Personally, I think the idea of god has, in fact, shaped the world to be better than it could be without it. The principles god sets forth are of kindness and generosity, which are the principles Jillette said had diminished because of the existence of god. Followers of god are normally kind and loving and almost always have other people in mind above themselves, yet Jillette tries to rationalize that they do not. There really isn’t any substantial evidence to back up his rational, other than his life experience. Since an outlier can happen his entire statement is pretty much null and void.

True the message of the Bible, in the overall sense, is love and kindness, however there have been many instances, far too many for my taste, in history where the Bible and God have been used to oppress a certain group of people because they are different. Are gays accepted into most chuches and congregations these days? No they are not, homosexuals are the unfortunate victims of the Bible today. Many times has the Bible been used as an excuse for the persecution of a group of people; in the Middle Ages it was the jews, throughout American history blacks have been oppressed with it, and now homosexuals are being pushed back and attacked by the very thing many claim that helped and saved them and showed them how to be kind and generous. The way we look at God today and the Bible must change, we look at it so often in archaic terms and try to apply them to the modern world. That cannot be, for the old and the new rarely ever make a good mixture. If we continue to present God and the Bible as we once knew it then we hold back not only society, but our species as well with our constant bickering. That is not to say that the Bible hasn't done some good, it is just that the overall oppression and inquisitions greatly outwiegh the good.
