Assertion Journal - In response to the on going debate on Gun Control, but mainly guns on school campuses.

Ever since the school shooting at Virginia Tech and learning about the Colombine shooting I have wondered if the "No Tolerance" (of guns) policies of many schools are even helping keep our schools and college campuses safe. I now believe that if even just one student had a gun while the Virginia Tech shooting took place then many lives would have been saved. Most people would argue that even if a person had a gun they probably wouldn't know how to use it well. The fact is that to carry a firearm concealed you have to pass a firearms training class that tests your marksmanship amongst other skills. These classes are not taught by any regular people either. The local police Departments and the National Rifle Association administer these tests to make sure each person is held to same standards as others. If one person had a concealed gun the tragedy of Virginia Tech would have ceased faster.

As for who to allow to carry guns is also a big problem. Should students be allowed to carry them or should Teachers only? I believe that either one could be able to because especially at the college level the students are responsible and mature enought o handle such a burden, but there should be some type of test to see if that person is mentally stable among other things. To make schools safer have some people carry guns but just make sure they are not the type to cause such problems like all of the previous schools shooters. I believe if there could have been just one person with a gun whether its a teacher or student that the tragedies could have been adverted.
