I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read
I think that this piece, by Francine Prose, is very interesting. The fact that Prose so blatantly states that children are not being exposed to the wide variety of books, thoughts, and ideas that could make them better people, thinkers, and possibly writers.

I think that the main point of this essay is that too much emphasis is being placed on the role of schools in education. Sure, the stuff you have to read for english class is generally boring and uninteresting, but that is only part of the problem. Schools should cater to students' interests instead of assigning the same mundane and general reading assignments. This might inspire students to look into stuff they get in school outside of the classroom. If I am interested in something I'm a whole lot more likely to remember it.
