Assertion Journal: Get a knife...
In Molly Ivins’s “Get a knife, get a dog, but get rid of guns,” she satirically shares with the audience her belief in why knives are better than guns. She writes that, [Second Amendment] a well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. Her argument is based on her belief that guns are not a bad idea, but should be rather regulated, and tediously given out; to such as police force, and those trained to use them, not young neighborhood boys. I agree with her on some level, that guns should be more restricted and requirements for ownership should be more rigorous, but does that also mean that men who are not in the military or in my case, retired, would be enabled from possessing a gun? Take my father. He has no criminal background, has been in the Marine Corps fore twenty plus years, but is now retired with a ‘civilian’ job. Because he is no longer in service, according to Mrs. Ivins, he would not be eligible to own one. That, is where I strongly disagree. I want to feel safe in my home, and we have a dog, and many sharp kitchen knives. But knowing that my dad has a stored gun away in case of an emergency, makes me feel much more secure than without one. So, I think that rather her requirements, perhaps extreme background checks and further looks into a person’s life, would maybe determine his or her integrity to own a gun. I most certainly do not consider myself crazy, and if I do not have a career path in the armed forces, I want to know that I have the privilege to buy a gun.
