Assertion-Thirty Things I Believe

Thirty Things I Believe
By: Tarak McLain

This article describes some of the principle beliefs that America says it values; however, America’s actions do not necessarily follow them to the T. How is it that a seven year old boy believes in the right principles of life; yet, millions of grown adults cannot act on them. The thirty items in McLain’s list are simple ideas America has grown up with, such as “I believe we’re all equal. I believe we can help people. I believe everyone is weird in their own way.” To me it is mind boggling that young kids are completely innocent about the world, but their simple ideas are what we should be following. Instead grown adults like to focus on the media, war, and hate. How do these negative ideas allow us to be positive individuals with an optimistic grasp on life? They don’t, that’s why suicide, depression, and an overall increased anger at society have developed. If only people could be more like this little boy. When I read his list I sat in shock immediately following reading. It floored me that a first grader could impact me that much with his mere words, let alone his actions in his community. I am personally inspired now to reevaluate my actions and beliefs.
