Assertion Journal

in response to I Believe in Cigarettes by margaret http://thisibelieve.org/essay/15930/

This short essay is really depressing. It is a personal writing by a person who is so absorbed by hate that she is unable to see the positive side of life. She names things that should make people happy and describes how she hates them. To reach a point this low you must be truly sick. The writer of this essay needs to learn to be grateful for the little things in life, and recognize that she can change her life just by changing the way she thinks. When you think your life is so bad you dont care if you live or die, you need a serious reality check. Like a slap to the face. Or a bucket of cold water. Get a life.

  1. After reading Nate's post, I went to read the original assertion to formulate my own opinion. I began to develop mixed emotions as I agree and disagree with parts of each essay, but I agree more with Nate than Mark. I believe that personal limitations must be acknowledged, not just accepted. We should adapt to our limitations and when there are things we do not know, attempt to discover them. There will always be the unknown, and that is okay. We do not have to find the answers to everything. Life is full of questions and that must be something we learn to accept. Unanswered questions cannot hog all of our thoughts, we just have to eventually accept it and place it in a little file cabinet in our brains to find the answer to someday.

I believe that personal limitations include your own weaknesses, so we must acknowledge these weaknesses and then do our best to work around them. Say you are bad at math. That does not mean that you should go, "Hey I'm not good at math so I'm just not going to work in this class." Your weakness in math does mean, however, that maybe you should not take 3 Advanced Placement math classes. Effort must still be put into math because it is an acknowledged limitation of yours. By putting effort into math at the highest level you can manage, your limitation will become less intense.

Acknowledging your limitations does not mean you cast them off as impossible. It means that you have to learn to work with it. You should always challenge yourself; but do not push yourself beyond your limits. This advice will help you to work on expanding your limits. If little by little you work on the things that limit you, the power that these things have over you will decrease. Everyone has his or her own gifts and talents. We cannot all be good at everything or our world would not be interesting at all. We must succeed through our strengths, and work on our weaknesses; it is the only way to be successful in this world.
