This peice by Benjamin Carson proves how much your parents can influence you in your lifetime. Throughout his life, Carson's mother always kept him focused on his school work so he would be headed for a good future. Carson also explains how his mother was very strong in her faith and was the rock that was steady for him throughout his life. Although I have never experienced the hardships of growing up underprivileged or having cancer, I can attest that there is no more important job than parenting.
Just as Carson's mother kept him focused on his school work when he veared off the road to success, my mother and father have also pushed my to be the best I can be so that I may be successful in the future. When Carson had cancer, his mother was his strength and told him that God was not through with him yet. She was his rock just as my parents are mine. Parenting to me is the most difficult job there is; being responsible for another persons life.
While I can understand where Carson is coming from, there is a part in his story that I find a bit confusing yet inspirational. His mother was illiterate. I find it strange that he was able to learn from an illiterate women yet inspiring that she continued to push for her son to be successful even though she did not grow up with the same benefits available to him.
In the end, Carson became a doctor. He says that his mother has continued to inspire him throughout his job and in his every day life. His mother was a great part in his life and his success and I believe this is true for many people.
