My Father's Evening Star was written by William O. Douglas from Washington D.C. In his essay, he tells of his father's last words and his eventual understanding of them. This poem tells of my point of view of Douglas's realization.
"If I die it will be glory, if I live it will be grace"
Words spoken by a dying father
Whose son would soon someday pace
In thinking of the words' meanings.
His son did not know then
What his father's immortal words meant
But now they're recognized by many men.
It will be glory for God to release the father's soul
From his earth-bound shell,
It would be grace to keep him here
In his father's sickly earth-bound hell.
Now the son knows he needs faith from God
As his father's words told him,
But the more he tries to make things clearer
The more the world's understanding light grows dim.
