Assertion Journal

This Assertion Journal is in response to Patty “the rockstar” Tabb’s journal about the article I Didn't Wash My Car Last Month by Jeff (no last name submitted).

While I agree with Pat about giving people less trouble about looks and appearances, I have to say that in life you are not constantly surrounded by people who know you. Whenever you leave your house someone will see you and judge you, because they don’t know you personally. That is why people strive to be perfect, and why people complain about their neighbors. They do so because they are always judged by who they associate with, live by, what they wear, among other things.
Now, whenever I see someone in their sweats at school, I know they probably woke up late or just don’t care, but when I’m at Wawa or Giant it’s a completely different story. I mean how many times have you made fun of people at Wal-Mart because they were dressed weird or look grungy? Personally, the number of people I have judged is to numerous to count, while I can’t say I am proud of that, I can say it’s a part of me that needs to be worked on. I never stop to think that the old woman in front of me in line is just having a bad day; I just assume she must be a slob.
It does not matter if we don’t like the fact that everyday we judge and criticize others, but it is the truth. Comparing your own lifestyle against another’s is a way to make yourself look better than what you are and it makes you feel better about how your life is turning out. So while people don’t appreciate being judge it is a part of everyone's life, and those who criticize them are only doing so because they fear judgment, and wish to point the focus in another direction.
The point is when it comes to those who criticize others; they do so because they are cowards themselves. While I don’t agree with hurting others for your own gain, it is something that is ingrained into most people’s brains. The need to judge others comes from this society’s obsession with perfection. Constantly we strive for the approval of everyone, and it doesn’t matter who is left behind, if we can accomplish that goal. The people who don’t care because they are happy are the lucky ones, and hopefully there will be a day where there are more people who can look past appearances and be happy.
