Assertion-The 50 Percent Theory of Life

Good things are always offset by bad things. That's what Steve Porter believes. This is also known as the fifty percent theory. I would highly disagree with this idea. I believe that the ratio of good to bad things occurring in a person's life is dependent on that person. Specifically the view of the person can change this ratio as well.

While one person might look at a death as a disaster and horror, another may believe that they are in a much happier place and see it as a good thing. Porter sees death as violent, slow and agonizing. Others may see death as quick, painless, and good for the soul. If I family member dies, I feel that we should be celebrating their life rather than mourning it. They went to heaven and are with God so I should be rejoicing. For me, death is not a complete loss or what Porter calls a "bad thing".

Personally, I believe that everything happens for a reason. If my favorite NFL team doesn't make it to the playoffs or my favorite baseball team doesn't make it to the World Series I do not see this as a bad thing. I believe it was a good thing so that they can find the areas they need to strengthen to be better next year.

I feel that Porter's 50 percent theory is not relevant to everyone's life. It may work for him, but the perspective people place on events truly determines the ratio of good and bad things that occur in their life. There is no set list of events that categorizes them into "good and bad". For this I believe that your life is what you make out of it. If you are always looking for a good to offset the bad, or vise versa, you will never truly experience life for what it is worth.
