We Can Afford to Give Parents a Break- A

Assertion Journal- We Can Afford to Give Parents a Break

The article We Can Afford to Give Parents a Break, by Jody Heyman, really brought up an issue I had never thought of before, the maternity leave policy in the United States. The text book focuses on how Heyman organizes her main arguments around other counterarguments, and I thought that for this case it was very effective. Heyman argues that women should have paid maternity and sick leave like the women in 164 other countries do.
One of the points that the author brings up is the fact that low-income mothers in the United States are twice as likely to have a child with asthma or another chronic condition, yet they are less likely to have the work flexibility to take care of that child. That was one of the points that really pushed me over to her side of the argument because the people who need the most flexibility in these situations don’t even have any.
Heyman brought up counterarguments and knocked them all down down. She then added some of her own additional arguments and created a solid argument that persuaded me to agree with her view.

  1. I completely agree that the parental leave policies in the United States are ridiculous. The US is considered to be a super power so there is no reason that women and our country are not receiving adequate amounts of leave, compared to other countries. With all the things that mothers do for us through out our lives I believe the least we can do is give them some paid sick leave, parental leave, and up to a month of paid annual leave.
