I am in almost total agreement with Meghan Daum in her beliefs about commercials on practicing safe-sex. The commercials always has young person, usually a female, who we are supposed to feel sorry for because her boyfriend was unfaithful or injecting himself. I can honestly say that I do not even watch the TV ads unless I am in the mood for a little entertainment. To many people, myself included, safe-sex advertisements are a joke. If the commercials do not seem realistic, how do the script writers expect America to listen.
I disagree with Daum’s statement that the commercials are trying to tell Americans to give up trust altogether. The people making these commercials would never try to tell their audience who to trust much less not to trust at all. The producers of these advertisements simply need to find a way to advocate safe-sex in a way that does not inspire humor because frankly, most people do not even think getting diseases anymore including AIDS. AIDS has been around for so long that most of the nation believes that it is just something that people in Washington, DC have, and that if you stay away from them, then you are safe. People making safe-sex commercials need to realize that America is aware that although AIDS can kill you, having sex can not.
