Political Cartoon- Rosa Parks
This political cartoon was drawn after Rosa Parks’ death. It is respectful toward her and her movements for civil rights. This cartoon is about her death. It assumes that she will be in heaven, and that she will be respected there for her efforts as well. This cartoon depicts Rosa Parks at the entrance to heaven, dressed plainly, with just her overcoat and handbag, what she presumably had in her possession when she famously refused to give up her seat in the front of the bus and move to the back. The angel, seemingly Saint Peter, is reading a ledger. He tells Rosa Parks that there is a spot in the front row for her, while the script at the bottom of the cartoon has a statement saying “We’ve been holding it open since 1955.” This quote reminds the viewer that it has been over 50 years since her bold contribution to the civil rights movement. This quote appeals to pathos, leaning on the fact that of course heaven waited for her, because of the way she lived her life. This good woman has logically been saved a front row seat because of her large impact on the civil rights movement by refusing to give up her front row seat. Not only can the quote at the bottom be taken positively, as a positive comment about Rosa Parks, but the quote can even be taken negatively. Some view it disapprovingly, as a comment criticizing the US’s slowness to both integrate and commemorate Rosa Parks.
