The author of I didn't wash my car last month describes his philosophy of life which he calls the rocking chair test. He puts everything he does in the perspective that when he is old, will he look back and think, "man I wish I had done...". I believe in his theory somewhat, however, just as he doesn't want to spend his future time worrying about what if, I don't want to spend my present time worrying about what I'll think about later.
If I went around all day thinking will I care about this when I'm old and in a rocking chair, I'd waste all of my time thinking rather than doing. Now, I do agree that thinking things out may help you in situations like snorting coke, and yes you're most likely not going to be wishing you had washed your car more often, but you're also not going to be wishing you hadn't.
I believe in living in the moment, and that you shouldn't have any regrets because even if it was for one moment, it made you happy. I may not even live long enough to be sitting in a rocking chair admiring my life, so why worry. And if I do get to that point, I'll be able to look back and think, yes maybe that was a stupid idea, but enjoyed it enough to remember it now.
