This assertion journal is a response to the New York Times article “Fearing a Flu Vaccine, and Wanting More of It”. It was published November 9, 2009. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/10/health/10klas.html?_r=1&adxnnl=1&ref=health&adxnnlx=1257811301-uB3KXNa64hH519tbsbgsNA
The H1N1 virus, more commonly known as swine flu, has infested our country with more fears than actual cases of infection it seems. Parents have been reluctant to vaccinate their children because they believe the vaccine has more risks than benefits. Does that make any sense? Why would the national CDC put the entire country at risk by advising them to vaccinate? If anything, the symptoms and tendencies of the swine flu to be more prevalent in children would want to encourage parents to vaccinate their children, you would think. What parents fail to realize is that the normal flu is just as deadly; swine flu is newer which makes it scarier. Education on the swine flu and methods of prevention will help to overcome this fear in today’s parents. The thing is the CDC has done a pretty good job on educating the public. Than why then are we still being ignorant and not vaccinating? I do not have an answer to this question but would like it if someone would build in what I talked about. You don’t have to agree, I would just like a response because the swine flu is a current event and the nations health is vitally important.

People fear the recent Swine Flu vaccine because they are afraid of the unknown. Parents’ main goal is to protect their children and make sure they are safe. They do not want to risk more possible diseases and infections from a vaccine that may or may not cure us. No one can know for sure if this vaccine is actually healthy. Why should parents trust the CDC when they say it is safe? What happens if it turns out that the vaccine does not work and it has detrimental consequences? Parents should question the H1N1 vaccine and its risks to ensure the safety and well being of their families. There are two opposing views to this vaccine; some parents trust and believe that they and their child will be better off with this vaccine, while other parents don’t believe in its safety. Injecting the body or inhaling these foreign substances in the nose does not appeal to many people because of the uncertainty in its future effects. There is no possible way to predict the future and I will not rest my health in the hands of insecurity.
