In the short essay A Balance Between Nature And Nurture by Gloria Steinem, Steinem throws out the idea that maybe people are asking the wrong question. Steinem suggests that instead of picking one side of the great debate on whether your life is based off of heredity or is it based off of your environment. She suggests that maybe, just maybe. That both factors influence the way you live your life, this includes a wide variety of things. From your intelligence level, to your athletic ability.
Steinem touches on some very good points. She tells of her childhood and how different environments influenced her ways, and than later on in her life how she went against her environment and showed off her instinctive side. She shows that although you are influenced by the outside world (your environment), you are also influenced by your genetics and the certain traits you occupied from your parents.
Steinem has a very good argument and I agree with her. I believe you cannot just pin a humans actions and potential only on one category; nature or nurture. I believe both highly influence how a person acts, and their potential in life. For example a great athlete does not only just have great genetics, in order to use their talent they have to have a great work ethic and goals. The athletes goals could push them to work harder and to be more discipline. So although the athlete has good athletic ability (genetics), they also have a influential environment (nurture).
