Assertion: The Power to Forget

This author starts off saying, "I believe in the power to forget."Well I believe in the power to forgive.

The author believes that he will only be able to get over his father's murder by forgetting about the murderer; however you cannot truely forget until you have accepted the situation and offered forgiveness. He states that every time he is reminded of his father's murderer he has to forget all over again. Why go through that when forgiveness would clear you of that person all together.Forgiveness isn't always for the other person. It is for yourself; to clear your mind and your thoughts, and to release you from the grudge that has been holding you back.

Sometimes it is better to let things go and let them be. Forgiveness is the first step towards forgetting.

  1. The statement that "forgiveness is a step towards forgetting" is a very true and accurate statement. In the essay, the writer is obviously bothered by the fact that trying to forget is a hard process, it has become almost impossible to forget that tragic event when the author's father was murdered. The author has been trying to forget the hardship that it has caused, but has been unable to successfully forget. The author notes that "... I don’t know for sure, because I have tried my very best to forget him....For a while I tried forgiveness, since that is supposed to be liberating. When I say for a while, I mean for years. But I failed." The author has not fully taken in the entire form of forgiveness where the author can forgive the murderer of his crime. The author still holds on to some of the grudges that are supposedly "unforgivable" by the author. The reason the author has been unable to forget the tragedy completely is because the author has not completely forgiven the murderer of his crime.
