I think Philip Weiss hit upon a popular topic with his essay. Like being blackmailed, getting locked trunk is one of those things you see in movies that makes you think about what you would do if you were in that situation. The same thing applies to criminals; they might try slamming someone into their own trunk before stealing the car. Unlike most people, Weiss actually has someone lock him in a trunk and he then proceeds to find a way out. Although I admire his efforts, you would never manage to get most Americans into a trunk unless it was against their will.
I think Weiss was heading on the right track when he questioned Debra Barclay from the Center for Auto Safety. Yes it is true what she said about trunk incidents being uncommon, but does that we should not be prepared nonetheless? There are many diseases out there that are uncommon, but if it is possible, I want to how prevent it because I do not want to be one in a million. Adding unlocking mechanisms to the insides of trunks would be excellent additions to the high-tech cars of this day and age. Instead of jacking up the car price because of extra packages that we do not need, throw in something useful like a way to get out of a locked trunk. After all, America is paranoid about these things and one extra gadget wont hurt.
