In There is No Job More Important Than Parenting, Benjamin Carson explains the powerful influence that his mother had in his life. My mother has also had a major impact on my life through shaping my character. This poem was written in response to Carson's assertion to represent our similar experiences with our mothers.
All Because of Mom
All because of Mom, I am who I am.
She's had my back every time I've been in a jam.
Since the beginning, she's been all I've had;
And for all her love, I am very glad.
She pushed me every day,
So that I could grow in every way.
In soccer, dance, and school,
Mom helped me to not look like a fool.
Parenting can often get tough,
But she continued even when the going got rough.
A prosperous future was what she sought,
Even when we repeatedly fought.
Desires of being like my friends
were soon brought to ends
as I learned she knew what was best,
and wasn't just trying to be a pest.
I learned to never quit
or begin to throw a fit,
but instead to move on
just like the sun at dawn.
Her parenting gave me great preparation
To grow up in this difficult generation.
I'm not saying this for a bam,
But all because of Mom, I am who I am.
