Assertion- This I believe Marijuana Should be legalized
I think that Marijuana should and should not be legalized. While there are benefits medically for smoking "weed" and it could stimulate the economy there are also ethical and social issues with legalizing it. If marijuana would be legalized there would be a steep decline in drug related arrest and old ladies would be able to take medication without fear of federal agents. But instead of full legalization it would be a great idea to do what Portugal has done which is take people into custody for drugs and giving them an intervention to prevent them from doing drugs. This has greatly decreased the number of drug users in Portugal. Legalization would open doors medically and fiscally this would allow researchers the ability to test marijuana to find cures for various diseases. This would also expand the medical markets with a new drug that everyone already knows about. The problems with marijuana ethically lie in its recreational use. Yes marijuana has the potential to do all these things but the main reason it is illegal is because it changes people. The scariest part of it is that marijuana lets you be okay with being bored. So who would actually discover the cure to cancer if no one is spending there spare time learning or applying themselves. This is why marijuana is illegal.

I think most of what Matt says is right, but I disagree with him that marijuana should be illegal. Everything he says about the drug is true, but those things shouldn't be enough to make it illegal. I think that people should be able to do what they want to themselves as long as they don't hurt anyone else, and this issue falls under that category. Billions of federal dollars have been spent on incarcerating otherwise law-abiding marijuana users. This is a waste of taxpayer money that could otherwise be used in a more positive way. Even these enormous efforts haven't been enough to even slow down the drug trade. Marijuana can be bought in virtually every public high school in the country. Whether its legal or not, people will still find ways to get it. Because of this, I think the laws against marijuana should at least be made less cost-generating, and we will just have to hope that someone who could find the cure for cancer would be smart enough to stay away.
