Assertion-In Praise of Simple, Everyday Tasks

In Praise of Simple, Everyday Tasks

This article by Annette Chopin was about the relaxation and ease of a life of simplicity. She talks about her beliefs in continuing simple tasks to get work done. She hangs the clothes on lines outside, makes the beds, sweeps the floors, and gardens. Through this, she finds time for herself, and a sort of overflowing peace. Many people nowadays wouldn’t want to do these things because they think it’s a waste of time, or a lot of work.

So many people these days have lives filled with activities to the brim- from soccer game, to homework, to karate lessons, to synchronized swimming classes, or other random bustle. Some people argue this lifestyle is the best way to live. They say you should fill up your live as much as you can, so that you’re living life to its fullest. Theres no time for anything else, like hanging laundry out to dry! That’s what dryers are for. Sweeping the floor by hand, finding each little crumb and putting it in the dustpan? Vacuums were invented for a reason. Right? Not necessarily.

Instead, Chopin thinks that doing simple ordinary chores can help your chi flow. It forms rhythm when she works steadily old-fashioned household tasks. She says it helps you feel connected to the world, which is true. People all over the world weed their gardens and make their beds. For some people  this might just seem like more work to fit into a schedule. I think she has the right idea though. I know that when my room is neat and tidy, I feel like I don’t need to stress out about things as much.
